Nanni Balestrini, Bastacani
Curated by Martina Cavallarin
January 8 - February 12, 2011
Nanni Balestrini is a poet and novelist, born in Milan and currently active between Paris and Rome, who has crossed his phrases, words, collages, poems, with his aesthetic moments and his lyrical moments, decades of political, artistic and social history Italian from the 1960s to today. The Bastacani video, which gives the title to the whole exhibition, is a sequence of ecological disasters and letters that invade while Antonio Rezza's performative voice is a litany of sentences that always end with the word dogs. In the central room of the gallery, a red wall tattoo like the writings that it welcomes, in form and content, is an accumulation of thought that transpires as an unofficial letter that can be more insightful and meaningful than an official communication. The timely and sudden changes of the vortexes of Balestrini's collages, the historical ones of the Sixties that appear in "Qualcosapertutti", Il Canneto Editore, as well as those extrapolated from the 1965 weekly Espresso, the geographical maps that through the practice of "cut and paste ”They form imaginary worlds or the Resonances, his latest production begun in 2009, are always suffused denunciations of an artist who has crossed the history of art, social history and his own individual history without tears, but without ceasing. Balestrini's is an exhibition that reflects a career in which the subject has always forced himself to narrate and never to narrate himself, highlighting the purity of an intellectual of yesteryear, freed from self-reference, secluded, but always present. At the beginning of the 1960s, he was part of the "Novissimi" poets and of the "Group 63", which brings together writers of the neo-avant-garde. In 1963 he composed the first poem made with a computer. He is the author, among other things, of Miss Richmond's cycle of poems and novels on the political struggles of 1968 and the years of lead such as Vogliamo tutto and Gli invisibili. He played a decisive role in the birth of the cultural magazines "Il Verri", "Quindici", "Alfabeta", "Zoooom". Also active in the field of visual arts, he has exhibited in numerous galleries in Italy and abroad and in 1993 at the Venice Biennale.
