The Equivocality exhibition by Matthew Attard, which inaugurated HIGLIGHT (the new project room
della Galleria Michela Rizzo), includes two types of works: 6 drawings, made on Ipad and
printed on aluminum, and 2 high reliefs, in aluminum wire fixed directly to the wall.
The two sculptures on display, Bravissimo! and Tu que no puedes derive, even in the titles, from the series of
Goya's Caprichos. These works are the starting point for the realization of the drawings on the iPad:
here the animal metamorphosis and the satirical atmosphere are in fact resumed. The drawings are the
result of the superimposition of various images (people, animals, food) borrowed from the web e
recombine in an arbitrary way until you reach an image that is now something new (le
cocacola-girls, the donkey-man, the frog-woman).
An element that should not be overlooked is the modus operandi of the Maltese artist, who chooses a
fluid and partially random process, allowing the direction from the sign itself to suggest
to follow.
In an overall analysis of the above, the continuum between the two techniques should be noted,
both in fact belong to the field of drawing, a drawing that is pure line, a line that all al
the more it becomes three-dimensional but never gets confused in spots or in the sum of hatches. Again, the
two are similar for synthetic realization, identifying in digital references as in waters
dyes the elements necessary for understanding the image.
Visual perception has always been the focus of the research of Matthew Attard, an artist fascinated by
the eye's ability to reconstruct, by reading the lines, images connected to the experience
individual or collective.
