The drawings on the wall - the wall drawings - that David Tremlett conceived and created for this exhibition in Venice curated by Rachele Ferrario are inspired by previous trips to Vietnam. The spaces are those of the studio that in recent years has hosted the atelier of the American artist Lawrence Carroll and which are now a new headquarters of the Michela Rizzo Gallery, which opens on this occasion with David Tremlett's Different Walls and with the project All Vertical Lines Intersect by David Rickard, curated by Elena Forin.
The space is evocative: the high walls, the mezzanine with the glass window from which a subdued light filters through, the closed rooms that alternate like in a labyrinth inspired David Tremlett who created two new wall drawings for his first exhibition in Venice. The first “drawing on the wall” develops vertically, “inhabits” and dialogues with the space and with Rickard's works. Tremlett rhythms the wall with different shapes and materials - pigments, but also the grease used by mechanics - on which to make the light reflect and vibrate. The dimensions and volumes expand in a vision of geometric and chromatic harmonies that make one with the pre-existing architecture.
Upstairs David Tremlett worked in a windowless environment. He transformed it into a sequence of volumes and colors - in the chromatic scale of grays, ochres, oranges - he woven a close conversation with the wall, the corners, the architectural structure, shaped with great lightness. In these last interventions the colors and shapes remain faithful to Tremlett's style, but are renewed and lived in a dimension of great freedom, marking an important moment of his expression.
