Shortly after the quarantine began, Galleria Michela Rizzo felt the need to create a working group to analyze the historical moment of the pandemic.

The artists Matthew Attard, Francesco Jodice, Ryts Monet, Antoni Muntadas, David Rickard, Alessandro Sambini and Mariateresa Sartori, the curators Elena Forin and Denis Isaia and the web designer Simona Bariselli met on Skype every week together with Michela Rizzo to discuss urgencies of this dramatically exceptional and unexpected moment.

Re-Index is a website that collects texts, works and video testimonies of the participants, giving life to shared reflections and visions, proposals, analyzes and discussions.

Jodice, Sambini and Bariselli in Milan, Monet in Vienna, Sartori and Rizzo in Venice, Forin in Parma, Rickard in London, Attard in Edinburgh, Isaia in Rovereto, and Muntadas in Sao Paulo in Brazil with practically impossible connections and the doubt of being able to return to New York: not only places, but also very different scenarios from which non-homogeneous ways and times have arisen.

From these encounters in the context of imprisonment, questions first arose: what effect does isolation have on artistic languages? And what is the impact on visions and the development of imaginaries? Which channels are possible and which (or who) are the recipients of the artistic work? And finally, what is the nature of space and time in isolation?

Re-Index is an attempt to give answers to these questions through artistic work, critical reflection, the methods of sharing projects, communication and rapprochement between the various figures in the world of art.

To make it possible to use this transversal map of ideas and contributions, Re-Index has taken the form of a website structured like the index of a book. The various chapters collect the contents developed within this debate, but the structure of Re-Index remains open to the introduction of new paragraphs until the end of the quarantine: this is a story that we are writing and that every day can compose new panoramas, solutions and perspectives.
